The Smithsonian's National Zoological Park was established by an Act of Congress in 1889. The giand panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is one of the world's rarest mammals. It is found in the wild in remote mountainous regions of central China.. The giant panda has distinctive markings on its coat and relies on bamboo for its diet.
