Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
Martha's Vineyard is an island located four miles off the southwestern coast of Cape Cod. It is separated from the mainland by Nantucket Sound and Vineyard Sound, and in the south by the Atlantic Ocean. It's one hundred square miles divided into townships.
Edgartown, the county seat, was a vigorous whaling port of the 19th century. Tisbury, which includes Vineyard Haven was important as a port of call for coastal vessels. Oaks Buffs, a resort town, came about through a Methodist Camp Meeting first held in 1835.
Other townships are West Tisbury, Chilmark, including the seaward island of Noman's Land, and the fishing village of Menemsha, and Gay Head, named for its colourful clay cliffs.
Martha's Vineyard is a popular destination for tourists around the world!
