As the Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiuttan) is an altar for worshiping Heaven, the number of stone components of its terrace, steps and railings are all in nine or multiples of nine, since nine is a Yang Number that symbolize the nine-tier Heaven in the Chinese culture. At the center of the upper terrace of the Circular Mound Altar, there is a piece of round stone slab called Tianxinshi meaning Heart of Heaven. Standing on it, one can produce echoes by shouting at or knocking on the wall.
